“Core Memory: Letting Go”

Artist Statement
This piece was completed over 10 months of painting, which better allowed me to work patiently through the process of creating something so important to me, even if that meant months without painting, no fixed deadlines, or taking breaks
The painting captures a pivotal and emotional moment of transition—moving between worlds and homes, from my parents’ to my new family. This shift is not only about letting go for myself but also recognizing the transformation it signifies for those in the lives I am leaving and entering.
In the composition, the bride’s parents are depicted with two hands each, symbolizing their nurturing and protective presence. In contrast, the bride and her now-husband are each painted with only one hand, coming together to symbolize their unity as they step into a new world, embrace new roles, and create a shared home. The ethereal background, combined with the parents’ positioning, evokes a sense of floating—a moment of transition—until they are grounded by the tree motif on the mother’s shawl, representing stability and connection to roots.
The lush green garlands around the bride and groom signify growth and the blossoming love they will cultivate throughout their journey together. Sunlit highlights glisten with hope, embodying the endless possibilities of their shared future.
A significant detail is the red-yellow ritual protection thread sewn onto each individual’s hands. This thread, steeped in tradition, symbolizes the eternal bonds formed through the marriage ceremony. Traditionally worn on the right wrist or arm by males and on the left by females, this thread represents a connection that transcends distance, reminding the couple of the ties that will forever link them to their loved ones.the new couple ventures, they will always be connected.

Artist Statement
"Quiet Reflections" is a minimalist exploration of serenity through the elegant form of a crane standing still in contemplation. In this piece, the crane represents grace and stillness, inviting the viewer into a moment of pause and introspection. The use of soft, flowing lines and a muted palette of blues and greens enhances the feeling of calm, creating a space for quiet reflection not only in the physical sense, but also within the self.
The negative space around the figure emphasizes openness and simplicity, allowing the viewer to focus on the subtle beauty of the crane, much like the way quiet moments in life can reveal clarity and depth. This piece encourages the viewer to find peace in stillness, and to connect with their own inner reflections, much like the gentle waters that mirror the crane's form.

In Sea Blossom, the delicate elegance of a single pink seashell is captured against a serene aquamarine backdrop. This contemporary painting exudes a soft and ethereal quality, achieved through its gentle brushstrokes and subtle approach. The shell, rendered in delicate hues of pink, evokes a sense of tranquillity and natural beauty, while the tranquil aquamarine background provides a soothing contrast that enhances the shell’s intricate details. The artwork embodies a harmonious balance between simplicity and sophistication, inviting viewers to appreciate the quiet grace of the sea’s treasures.

My colour reduction relief printmaking piece illustrates a woman resembling “Kali Ma”, a Hindu goddess who represents power and destruction. The colours I used in this print were inspired by traditional colours typically used in existing artistic depictions of Kali Ma, and the style of illustration is inspired by retro prints of religious figures in India.
I wanted to emphasize the power of the goddess by surrounding her with the colour red, generally representing passion, anger, and love. Kali Ma is seen as a mother figure. As such, her depicted with her tongue sticking out symbolizes her fire, as well as her sacrifices and her ability to swallow all the evil and darkness that linger in the world. Through her, the earth can be free of these existences. Kali Ma also wears two garlands: the first made from skulls representing the various heads of ego, and the second of hibiscus flowers to represent empowerment.
Women often feel that they need to hold their tongue in society in order not to disrupt or inconvenience the world around them. My conception of this print reflects my hope that women more readily tap into their power and divine feminine energy to unleash the fire within themselves.

This colour reduction relief piece showcases a close-up of my character, Kali Ma, from the piece above. I wanted to focus on the fire raging in her eyes; it is up to the viewer to interpret either if the anger of fire is within her, she is witnessing this chaos, or a combination of both.

My black and white key image matrix illustrates a woman peacefully sleeping in protective womb-like space. Growing plants surround her to symbolize both her development and revival. The second layer around this barrier is filled with the stars, space, and the infinite universe. I wanted this composition to feel balanced and calm and depict what retrieving into one’s safe space, away from the chaos might feel like as being stuck in the extremes of the world are frankly exhausting.
